Sony warns about the end of the physical records for new PlayStation games

Sony said on Thursday he would stop publishing new PlayStation games in physical disks starting in January 2028, marking a major change towards a digital future for her game business.

In a blog post, the company said the new PlayStation titles will continue to be sold through retail vendors, but physical copies will contain digital download codes instead of playing records.

Sony said the decision reflects changing consumer habits and wider trends throughout the entertainment industry.

“While consumer preferences and the entertainment industry generally continue to move away from physical disks to digital ones, this is a natural direction for the Sony Interact Entainment to adapt to consumer trends”, the company said.

The announcement comes days after Rockstar Games said the long-awaited Grand Theft Auto VI will also be launched without a physical disk, stressing the industry's accelerated movement towards digital distribution.
