Meta indicted in US, allegedly using Al to fire health workers

A group of 26 former Meta Platform employees has filed a lawsuit in a federal court in Oakland, California, accusing the company of using Al-backed software to identify disproportionally disabled employees or those who had received medical permission during the process of mass layoffs.
According to the indictment, Meta is based on indicators such as productivity and the use of Al means to assess employee performance, placing in disadvantage those who had been absent due to health problems.
At the beginning of this year, Meta announced that it would cut about 10% of its global workforce, or nearly 80,000 jobs, with the first wave of evacuations that began in May and other later planned cuts.
The plaintiffs, who have chosen to remain anonymous, claim the company has violated federal and state laws that prohibit discrimination or revenge against disabled employees, pregnant women or persons who receive medical permission.
They come from six American states, including California and New York, as well as the District of Colombia.
Meta, on the other hand, has dismissed the charges. A company spokesman said the claims are groundless.
“Job Force Management Locations and company organisation have been taken and continue to be taken by people, not by Al”, the spokesman said.
The case is expected to be considered in court, while it could raise new questions about Al's use in decision-making for human resources management.
