TXT Gostivar's poisoning epidemic has affected over 2,900 people, while hundreds of citizens continue to turn to hospitals with gastroinstinal symptoms every day. Authorities suspect the epidemic is linked to pollution of drinking water. Labal tests have found that the level of bacteria was 48 times over the permitted border on the water network.
During a raid on the village of Vretok, it was found that pumps that directly injected water from the Vardar River into the water supply network were illegally placed on the main pipeline. Epidemiologists estimate that recent findings significantly reinforce the hypothesis that the epidemic has been caused by microbiological water contamination.
Meanwhile, the ban on drinking water use in Gostivar remains in effect. Authorities have urged citizens not to use network water either for drinking or for preparing food until the release of final laboratory results that will confirm it is safe.
