(2 hours ago)Ambassadors of European Union states, together with the chief of the EU Office, have visited Zvecanin today, where they have also met with the heads of four northern municipalities they have discussed handling their duties after receiving mandates in October 2025.
According to the EU Office's announcement, the heads of four municipalities have counted the challenges that they say affect the delivery of services, including lack of archives, qualified staff, budgetary restrictions, property-related issues and “control from the central level on municipal activities”
European diplomats have also held separate meetings with representatives of civil society and members of municipal municipalities from opposition parties.
The European Union and its member states remain strongly devoted to a strong local self-government in Kosovo and to decentralisation based on the Constitution and Law on Local Self-Government. They call for improving co-ordination between the local and central level, effective support for municipalities from relevant ministries and equal implementation of the principles of rule of law throughout Kosovo”, the EU communiqué said.
The effective, accounting and fully functional municipal administrations, which provide quality services to all Kosovo residents, including in the north, are in the public's interest and essential for building trust, stability and prosperity. As Kosovo's strongest and most reliable partner, as well as the largest donor of financial assistance, the European Union will continue to support municipalities and reforms strengthening local self-government throughout Kosovo”, the EU's response concludes.
