More than 3,500 people die from earthquakes in Venezuela, while thousands remain homeless

The number of victims from the two earthquakes that hit Venezuela has increased to 3.535, authorities announced on Monday, while nearly 18,000 people continue to be homeless more than a week after the disaster struck the capital and surrounding coastal areas.
Senior state official Jorge Rodriguez said the latest official balance shows that 16,740 people were injured, while 17.854 were left without refuge after the June 24th earthquakes, which had magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 and happened just seconds apart from each other, reports the report. The new figures point to the extent of the disaster at and around the Caracas and La Guairas, the hardest hit coastal area, as criticism of the government mounts.
Venezuela's Social Affairs Subcommittee announced that at least 12,800 people are standing in 80 shelters built in Caracas and La Guaira.
