Climate change caused by man is exacerbating extreme weather phenomena worldwide, promoting deadly extremes that can strike in unusual periods and unexpected places, taking human lives.
Guardian journalists in five European capitals spoke with tourists and local residents about how they experienced this unusual heat wave in May, as well as their concerns about what climate emergencies can bring to the future.
Jim, a visitor from Sydney, talked about the heat wave in Madrid where he went with his wife Marina.
These are not at all the temperatures we expected,” he said. We took clothes for fresher weather because that's what we expected”.
