A 21-year-old with a violent past, serious psychiatric problems and an obsession with the White House was the author of the armed attack that took place Saturday afternoon (23/5) in Washington, alerting American authorities.
It's Nazir Best, a native of Maryland, who was already known for US secret services. According to information from CNN and ABC, the 21-year-old had previously attempted to violate the security of the Presidential residence. In all, just the day before, he had tried to get into the area, telling the guards it was “Jesus Christ” and asking to arrest him, while a similar attempt had been made a year earlier.
The event occurred shortly after 6:00 local time (0100 in Greece), when Best approached the security perimeter near the historic building. As Secret Service spokesman Andy Guglielmi stated, the young man pulled a gun out of a bag and opened fire on the police at a checkpoint.

Secret Service agents responded immediately and responded to the fire, seriously wounding the suspect. The 21-year-old was sent to a nearby hospital where his death was confirmed. No agent was injured by the shooting, yet a passerby was hit by missing bullets and seriously injured.
We heard about 20 to 25 shootings, like fireworks, but there were gunshots and they all started running”, told the French News Agency (AFP) Reid Adrian, a Canadian tourist on the scene.
At the time of the shootout, US President Donald Trump was inside the White House.
He had cancelled the planned moves due to the tense situation with Iran. The Secret Service spokesman assured that the president was not affected by the event.
This is marked as the third suspected attempt on Trump's life in the past two years, as the current incident comes only a month after an armed attack at the White House Correspondents' Evening Meal.
With a post, Donald Trump thanked the Secret Service and the authorities for the rapid and professional response. He also stressed the need for increased security in the American capital:
“Thank the Secret Service and order forces for quick and professional action against an armed man near the White House, who had a violent past and a possible obsession with our country's most beloved building.
The gunman is dead after sharing fire with Secret Service agents near the White House gates. This incident comes a month after the attack on the Correspondent Evenings and shows how important it is for all future administrations to have the highest possible security in Washington. Our country's national security demands this! ”
