US has imposed sanctions on Iran for nearly 50 years

Finalisation of an agreement to end the US and Israeli war with Iran is hampered by disagreements over the language on Iran's nuclear programme and the removal of sanctions, according to US officials.
One source said Iran has called for commitments to lift sanctions and unlock assets, while the US have insisted that US financial assistance will not come until progress is made on the nuclear issue.
The US has imposed sanctions on Iran since 1979, after the US Embassy in Tehran was seized after the Iranian Revolution, according to the US State Department.
A Congressional Research Service report (CRS) on US sanctions against Iran says they were used to prevent, limit and encourage change in the opposing behaviour of Iranian regime”.
The US “Sanctions against Iran are undoubtedly the broader and inclusive group of sanctions the United States holds against each country”, the report says.
Financial penalties are widespread, halting almost all US trade with Iran, blocking Iranian government assets in the country and halting foreign assistance and selling weapons.
In 2013, the Treasury Department Foreign Asset Control Office said the United States could sell food, medicine and medical equipment to Iran.
According to the CRS report, the US is also allowed to offer Iranians telecommunications equipment to help them bypass efforts by the Iranian regime to cut off internet access.
On Saturday, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Esmail Baghaei, said the “removal of sanctions will not be discussed in this short term “but stressed that Iran's “request to remove all sanctions is specifically in the text” of its proposals.
