Hargrees: Politicians must find a way to win all sides

United Kingdom Ambassador to Kosovo Jonathan Hargrees has asked Kosovo politicians to work together for the country and in the spirit of compromise.

Hargrees said politicians should find ways in which all sides win, not the situation in which one party wins and the other loses. According to him, Kosovo is built and developed in the spirit of co-operation.

He urged political parties to take into account the need for compromise and co-operation after the elections during the election campaign.

What will be very important during this campaign that begins Thursday is that politicians in all parties campaign with the knowledge they will still need some kind of compromise, for some kind of agreement after the elections. We do not know what the solution will be because we do not know the numbers that will arise, but will certainly need the president's election and political parties in Kosovo will have to find a way to win all sides, not where one loses or wins the other. I believe that Kosovo has a healthy Constitution, in which we have worked together”, Hargrees noted about Rtk, the Periscope broadcasts.

According to him, it is now necessary for politicians to work that way objectively -- that is, that is, the division of powers, decentralisation and the need for parties to accommodate each other's interests and requirements and work together.

This is how this country was born and I believe it's done pretty well. What will be of great importance in the coming weeks is for Kosovo politicians to testify that they are able to work in this spirit, in the spirit of what is good for the state and work together to achieve this”, he said.

Harreves said all are pending election results, but praised that the outcome of the current political situation is a must.

I believe that everyone is waiting for the results after June 7th, and that I believe is a natural attitude. But I also believe that everyone wants to see the outcome of this situation that is dangerous for Kosovo. I believe that's very clear to everyone. So I really hope that in the coming weeks this will be the priority for all political parties and their leaders. I worry that the longer this thing lasts, the less prepared Kosovo will be to face challenges facing it globally and then in the country. Kosovo needs far more urgently for a stable government, a political compromise that will help Kosovo demonstrate its determination to gain trust from Allies”, Hargrees said.

He said Kosovo should continue the path towards Euro-Atlantic integration and that progress towards international organisations should be built through concrete results.

This type of progress must be made, cannot be given”, Hargrees said.

The British ambassador also raised concerns about political language and verbal attacks on social networks, especially women targeting public office.

“I am alarmed by the things I've seen in recent weeks on social networks, especially those attacks on women in politics”, he said.

Hargreaves called on political leaders to engage publicly to curb such approaches and promote respect in the political discourse.

“I challenge political leaders all to make a public commitment to persuade or encourage their supporters not to apply such approaches”, he said.

According to him, rapid technological development and social networking impact require functional institutions and policies addressing new social challenges.

This may only be one reason why we need a solid government”, the ambassador said.

He called for respect for human dignity to be maintained during the election campaign and avoid attacks on social networks.

“I hope people are not treated like this in social media, treated with respect”, he said.

Speaking of the possibility of achieving political compromise after the elections, Hargrees said he remains optimistic.

I believe that it is absolutely attainable and that it remains absolutely for political parties to find the” road, he said.

The British ambassador said he believes political leaders will put state interest on political differences.
