Former Belgrade Mayor Arrested

The former candidate for Pristina chairman, Vegam Gashi, has been arrested Wednesday in a special Prosecution and Police operation.
Gashi, the owner of a company specialising in the engineering field, is suspected of using the bribing “ ”.
Along with the former coalition candidate Kosova e Re (AKR) for Pristina chairman, Nexhat Raif, a close associate in business, has also fallen under handcuffs.
They are suspected of involvement in bribery in a case of illegal property expropriations years ago.
“V.G. and N.R. [have been arrested, v.j] for criminal work”, the Special Prosecutor said in a press release Wednesday.
The Prosecution Action has been held in three municipalities: Pristina, Fushe Kosovo and Obilic.
Five more, including three public officials, have been arrested during the operation, according to the Prosecutor's announcement.
Among those arrested is Avdi Piraeus, a former candidate of the Democratic League of Kosovo for deputy. Pireva is suspected of helping commit the criminal offence and taking bribes. He had run for deputy in the 2021 elections.
On the website of the Democratic League of Kosovo, Piraeus also figures members of the LDK General Council.
The portal signal today reported based on sources that Nedmije Karaqi was arrested in the case. Paparacy Karaqi, official of the State Lawyer, reportedly has family ties to Piraeus.
“H.M., U.S. and H.M., for criminal work Misuse of official position or authority. N.K for criminal offense taking bribes, and A. P, for criminal acts of assistance in carrying out the criminal act of bribery and taking bribes”, the Prosecutor said in the communique.
During the implementation of the control order, the Prosecutor has announced that technological equipment has been seized, “ready-to-valued money of 6,450 (six thousand and four hundred and fifty) of euros, and various documentation”.
Regarding the same case, in December of last year, the Special Prosecutor and Police, in co-operation with the Kosovo Agency for Intelligence, arrested seven other people over the same case.
Former Trade Minister Fadil Ismajli was arrested in the first action, as well as former AKR official and friend with Vegam Gashi. Ismajli, before becoming minister of commerce in 2010, had been the owner of the Komtel Project Engineering company.
Today, the owner of the same company is Vegam Gashi. It owns 100% of the Komtel company's shares, according to public data near the Business Record Agency.
The Intel Project Engineering has been talked about in the past for benefits from public tenders.
