Kosovo towards European record for most frequent election cycle

Kosovo risks entering an unusual record in Europe, having one of the shorter election cycles, as a result of successive political crises and lack of institutional consensus. According to comparison data, the country has frequently moved into election processes within a short period of time, noting [...]
In most European states, the last three parties of elections span a period of about 7 to 10 years. Kosovo stands out significantly: if no agreement is reached on the president's election, and the country goes to new elections, the last three parliamentary elections would be included within one year and four months.
During 2025 alone, Kosovo held two parties of parliamentary elections, while the country is again facing the possibility of new elections due to failures to elect the president. The December 2025 parliamentary elections came after a long political stalemate and after previous elections in the same year, where no party secured the necessary majority for the formation of stable institutions.
The current crisis relates to the inability to elect the president, the process that requires specific quorum in the Assembly. The failure of the first round in March and the constitutional deadlines that followed have pushed the country towards another critical moment, with real risk of new elections if no political agreement is reached. /REL
