From gas to statetops: U.d. President Albulen Hadziu

Haxhiu, 38, will be in charge of the state until the deputies of the 10th legislature are having a constitutional deadline until April 28th to elect the new president.

On the contrary, the country must hold early elections within 45 days.

Under the Constitution, the position of the presidential task leader, “cannot be exercised for a period longer than six months”.

After accepting the postal duty of April 4th by the president thus far, Haxhiu said he is aware of the constitutional responsibilities this task brings, though temporarily.

“I understand responsibility and constitutional obligations and pledge that I will act in accordance with the Constitution and legislation in power”, Haxhi said as he accepted the task.

Albulen Haxhiu is part of the ruling party, Vetevendosje Movement (LVV), while the Speaker of the Parliament is elected on February 11th, the day the new government was formed.

Climbing it has not been an easy process. It has been nominated for chief parliament over 50 times after the February 9th parliamentary elections of 2025, but has never secured the necessary votes.

For several months, however, she exercised the position of deputy speaker until the announcement of the December 28th 2025 early elections.

How is Haxhi known?

With joining the Vetevendosje Movement, Haxhiu has been elected deputy of the fourth Kosovo Parliament legislature in 2011- 2014.

She has been deputy seven times in a row, while in the last four legislature she has been appointed to other positions -- the minister, deputy head of the Parliament and vice-president.

As an MP, she has led the Commission for Legislation, Mandate, Immune, the Parliament Rule and the supervision of the Anti-Corruption Agency.

In 2020, Haxhiu has been appointed justice minister, and has been renamed to that position even in the next government formed in 2021.

In the February 9th and December 28th 2025 parliamentary elections, she was the most voted woman in the first election process she won over 125 thousand votes, in the second, over 174 thousand Sosh.

From Street Protests to Presidency

While in opposition, Haxhiu has almost always been seen in front of the Vetevendosje Movement protests, for which he has been arrested several times.

In 2018, after a several-year process, Haxhiu was sentenced on bail by the Constitutional Court in Pristina for tear gas and obstructing the official person, actions she and other deputies of the Vetevendosje Movement took to prevent the ratification of the demarcation agreement with Montenegro and the Association of Serb-run municipalities.

She was also involved in tensions in July 2023 as justice minister.

During a session of the Parliament, Hadziu physically clashes with Democratic Party of Kosovo deputy Mergim Lushtaku, who watered Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti while speaking at the speaker.

Earlier in the year, the Constitutional Court in Pristina has rejected an indictment against Hadzi, and several other ex-Deputes, who were accused of possession of tear gas in the Kosovo Assembly in 2016, ending a lengthy judicial process.

The president's post is born on May 11th 1987 in Pristina.

Studies have been completed at the University of Pristina Law Faculty and at the University of Southeast Europe, in the direction of criminal law.

Haxhiu is married to former LV member of the Central Election Commission (KQZ), Alban Krasniqi, and has three children. /Radio Free Europe/
