CNN: Iranians submit new US proposal

Iranians have submitted a new proposal that would reopen Hormuz Strait, but leave the situation of talks on key US requirements unclear, according to a source known to the issue, CNN reports. Iran's proposal would require that Washington first complete the war and provide guarantees that it will not resume, according to a report on Lebanese television Al Mayadeen, linked to Iran, which was quoted by the Tasnim news agency linked to the Iranian state. Negotiations on navigation through the strait and Iran's nuclear programme would only come to a later stage.
If an agreement is reached, the process will be passed to the second phase to discuss how to manage the Hormuz Strait after the end of war”, Al Mayadeen reported. Discussions on Iran's nuclear programme would begin only after those conditions are met.
Axios first reported that the White House has received a proposal under which Iran wants the end of the war before the nuclear programme is discussed. The report also claims that Iranian leadership is divided in terms of nuclear concessions to be considered.
The White House reiterated that President Donald Trump, who plans to gather his national security team on Monday to discuss the proposal and options ahead, “keeps the cards in hand”.
“These are sensitive diplomatic discussions and the US will not negotiate through the media. As the president has said, the United States keeps the cards in hand and will only make an agreement that puts the American people first, never allowing Iran to have nuclear weapons”, Deputy Press Secretary Olivia Wales said in a statement to CNN.
