Commission for Legislation, Mandate and Imunites member Adnan Rrustemi announced that the commission was tasked with this task by Parliament Speaker Albulen Haxhiu, to review the amendments and to develop the necessary institutional procedures.
According to Rrustem, the proposals aim to change the way the president is elected, switching from choice in the Assembly to direct elections by the people.
He stressed that these amendments are backed up by the argument that such a model would help eliminate political drives that in the past have hampered the normal functioning of institutions and jeopardised institutional stability.
“This way is intended to avoid political blockades that have often accompanied the president's election process in the Assembly, creating more stability and more sustainable functioning of institutions,” Rrustemi stressed.
The Commission for Legislation is expected to continue with the review of amendments in the coming days, while then they will be processed for further steps in the Assembly.
