Hillary Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, agreed to testify behind closed doors after a long debate with the republican-led panel that culminated in a two-party vote to recommend that both be held on charges of contempt of Congress for failing to appear under the indictment order. The room was on the verge of a vote in the hall, which was ready to be approved by two-party support when the Clintons submitted to the committee's requests for face-to-face questioning. This change marked a victory for representatives James Comer of Kentucky, republican committee chairman, reports CBS newsFollow Periscope.
Comer denied Clinton's requests to keep questions in public, but has shown that a public hearing is an opportunity after closed-door testimony.
Bill Clinton's testimony is scheduled for Friday.
At least 10 Republican members are expected to participate in the evidence in Chappaqua, New York, according to a commission deputy. Nine Democrats are expected to participate, according to a source known to the issue.
Neither Clinton has been charged with violations, and both have called for full publishing of Epstein's files.
In an interview with the BBC last week, Hillary Clinton accused Comer of taking a firm stand in face-to-face evidence to clear the focus of President Trump's relationship with Epstein and dealing with files from his administration.
I have very strong thoughts about what they're hiding and who they're protecting,” she said. “Why do they want to drag us into this? To get attention away from President Trump. It's not complicated. ”
- Trump has denied any offense associated with Epstein.
In a sworn statement submitted to the commission on 13 January, Hillary Clinton denied any “personal knowledge” for crimes committed by Epstein or his associate Ghislaine Maxwell. She also said that “has never had any responsibility or involvement” in the Justice Department's investigation and prosecution of Epstein and Maxwell over its two decades in public office or as private citizens.
I don't remember meeting Mr. Epstein, or any specific interaction with her”, she said in her statement, adding that Maxwell had a “personal relationship with a mutual friend”, although “does not remember the specifics of my interactions with”.
In the BBC interview, Hillary Clinton said he met with Maxwell, who is serving a prison sentence on charges of sexual trafficking, “in several cases” through the Clinton Foundation.
Comer said in a statement Monday that Clinton's testimony “is essential to understanding the Epstein and Maxwell sex trafficking network and the ways in which they sought to gain favors and influence to be protected from considering”.
MP Robert Garcia of California, the highest democrat on the commission, said he wants to know more about Epstein's involvement with foreign governments.
There is much evidence that shows in a certain direction about Jeffrey Epstein's involvement with foreign governments. I think these are questions that I certainly have and that I'm going to ask”, Francisco told reporters Monday.
