Women in <x0hije”, gender equality in local elections remains far apart

In the October 12th local elections, out of a total of 206 candidates competing for the mayoral post, only 12 are women, while 194 are men. These figures testify to a very low representation of women in the mayoral leadership race, raising concerns about the lack of gender equality in politics. Vetevendosje Movement, as [...]
The Vetevendosje Movement, as the largest party in the country, has nominated only one woman, Erzagona Trdevcin as the candidate for chairmanship of Drenas, while all other candidates of this party are men. A similar approach is noted at the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), which has run only one woman for the municipality of Zubin Potok, writes. KP, broadcast Periscope.
Partial exceptions from this trend are the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) and the Social Democrat Initiative. The PDK has nominated three women as candidates in northern Mitrovica, Peja and Kamenica, while the initiative has done the same in the municipalities of Vushtrri, Istog and Prizren.
The Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK) has run two women in the municipalities of Fushe-Kosovo and Ferizaj, while the Social Democrat Party (PSD), has also nominated two women, Besa Sahin in Pristina and Nature Kuchin in Decani.
Kosovo Women Network ( RGK estimates that political subjects in the country are not offering women sufficient space to be a candidate, whether for mayoral positions or even for municipal assemblies.
Besarta Breznica by RGK stresses that political parties in Kosovo continue not to view women as potential leaders and therefore do not include them in leadership positions.
According to her, this constitutes violations of the Law for Elections, which guarantees gender representation of 50% on election lists, including the race for mayors and members of municipal assemblies.
Naim Jakaj from the Kosovo Institute for Justice stresses that from the Certificate of candidates and political subjects for local elections, there is seen to be a very low number of women running for mayors.
For the October 12th municipal elections, 93 political subjects are certified, out of which 32 political parties, 2 coalitions, 32 civic initiatives and 27 independent candidates. The overall number of candidates, representing these political subjects, is 5,626 candidates, out of whom 206 candidates for mayors and 5 thousand 420 for members of the Communist Assembly. /Periscope
