The agents discovered more than 300 SIM card servers and 100 thousand SIM cards in several locations within a radius of about 50km from New York, according to a statement Tuesday.
The service did not identify officials who were at risk, the nature of threats or nationalities that could be involved, reports cnbc.
They said the Secret Service has not publicly accused any nation, in part due to sensitivity over this week's meeting of the UN General Assembly.
The potential for disturbing the telecommunications of our country that constitutes this network of devices cannot be sufficiently highlighted”, said Secret Service Director Sean Curran.
He said the investigation “points out potentially malicious actors that immediate threats to persons protected by us will be investigated, found and eliminated immediately”.
