The resolution was backed by 14 of the Council's 15 members, but fell because of American veto. This is the sixth time the US has been using veto since the beginning of the war between Israel and Hamas, reports Reuters.
The resolution's text also required the release of all hostages held by Hamas and other groups in Gaza.
Meanwhile, UN officials warned that Gaza is already in a confirmed hunger condition, and that the humanitarian situation is deteriorating every day.
