Trump orders troop deployment in Portland and ICE objects

Ordering the last blow to a city led by Democrats, Trump said in a post in the social media that he was giving instructions to the Secretary of Defence, Pete Hegseth, “provided all troops needed to protect war-torn Portland and any ICE facility under siege from the attacks of Antifas and other local terrorists”.

Portland Mayor Keith Wilson, responding to Trump's command, said: “The number of necessary troops is zero, in Portland and in any other American city. The President will not find lawlessness or violence here unless he plans to carry it out. ”

At a press conference Friday, Wilson and other local leaders sought calm in the face of an apparent influx of federal officers that the mayor said did not come at the request of the city.

US Senator Ron Wyden, a Democrat from Oregon, wrote on X that Trump “may be repeating the 2020 manual and entering Portland with the aim of provoking conflict and violence”.

In 2020, protests erupted in the center of Portland, the enclave of the northwest Pacific with its reputation as a liberal city, following George Floyd's murder in Minneapolis, writes Reuters, broadcast Periscope.

The protests continued for months, and several civic leaders at the time said they were prompted and not extinguished by the deployment of federal troops from Trump.

Oregoni Governor Tina Kotek, a Democrat, said her office was asking the White House for more information.
