According to Estonian authorities, the Russian plane has broken into the country's airspace, staying within NATO's sovereign territory for several minutes before leaving. The event is being investigated by the alliance's military and diplomatic authorities.
Following the violation of Estonia's airspace from Russia, NATO spokeswoman Allison Hart said the North Atlantic Council would meet early next week to discuss the incident further in detail, which constitutes the activisation of Article 4.
Estonia earlier had officially requested consultations under Article 4 of the Washington Treaty.
This is not the first time Russian planes are accused of violating airspace in Eastern Europe, but the current situation is being deemed more dangerous because of the tense climate in Western and Moscow relations. /Periscopi
