United States President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he intends to hold war talks in Ukraine in the coming days, as at his August summit with Russia's President Vladimir Putin, he did not bring any progress.
Trump is disappointed by the inability to stop Russia's invading war in Ukraine, which began in February 2022 because he had initially predicted that he would be able to complete it very soon when he took office in January.
Trump said talks will be held in the coming days.
A White House official said Trump is expected to speak on the phone Thursday with Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelensky.
The French presidency said earlier Wednesday that some European leaders, including Zelensky and French President Emmanuel Macro, will call Trump on Thursday afternoon.
This call is expected to follow a largely virtual meeting Thursday, organised by France, with about 30 countries to discuss their latest efforts to offer Ukraine security guarantees once there are peace deals with Russia.
European leaders are also expected to condemn Moscow for lack of will for peace talks.
Putin has shown little interest in ending the war, as he and Trump expressed optimism to make progress during their meeting in Alaska on 15 August.
“I have no message for President Putin”, Trump told reporters at the White House during his meeting with Polish President Carol Nawrocki.
He knows my position and he will make a decision one way or another. Whatever decision it makes, we will either be satisfied with it, or disappointed, and, if we are disappointed, you will see what will happen”, he said.
Trump did not explain what he meant, but he has previously talked about the possibility of imposing new sanctions on Russia.
Trump also said the war would be resolved in “a way or another”, but that he had not realised it would be so difficult to end.
I thought this would be much easier”, Trump said. I thought it would be somewhere in the middle of the list, maybe one of the easiest. As for the war, you never know”, he said. / REL/ Periscopi/
