US President Donald Trump will speak at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, as will leaders of key regional actors like Jordan and Qatar, the BBC reports.
On Monday, the US did not participate in a one-day summit organised by France and Saudi Arabia, which focused on plans for a two-state solution to the conflict. Other G7, Germany and Italy also lacked.
Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta, Andorra and San Marino will also recognise the Palestinian state, as the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Portugal announced recognition Sunday.
International pressure is increasing on Israel due to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the construction of settlements in the West Coast.
Israel has said recognition would reward Hamas for the attack by the Palestinian armed group on 7 October 2023 in southern Israel, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 were taken hostage.
More than 65,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israel since then, according to the Hamas health ministry in Gaza. Israeli forces are currently conducting a ground offensive aimed at taking control of Gaza City, where one million people lived and a famine was confirmed last month. /Periscope/
