The US president stressed co-operation in the field of trade and military industry, while warning of the arrival of “excellent agreements” for both countries.
War in Ukraine was also the focus of discussions. Trump demanded of Erdogan to stop buying oil from Russia, naming the conflict a terrible and unnecessary “ ”.
“War has cost millions of lives. And for what? Shameful”, the American president said. He sharply criticised the Kremlin's actions and stressed that “Putin should stop”.
Asked by journalists how Erdogan could contribute to peace efforts between Russia and Ukraine, Trump said the Turkish president is the respected “from both sides” and could play a key role in facilitating a dialogue between Vladimir Putin and Volody Zelensky. However, he noted that Turkey is currently standing “very neutral”.
Trump added that the personal recognition Erdogan has with Putin could be an important advantage.
“He knows Putin as I know”, Trump said, stressing once again his belief that this is one of the easiest conflicts to resolve, if there is the right will.
For his part, President Erdogan said “very pleased with” for his visit to the White House and stressed the importance this visit coincides with the UN's 80th General Assembly. He expressed optimism about the future of Turkey- The US and said there are concrete opportunities to bring co-operation “to another level of”.
During his speech, Erdogan also cited the issue of F-35 and F-16 fighter aircraft, underlining that this is one of the key topics to be discussed at the meeting with President Trump.
The meeting in Washington comes at a critical moment for geopolitical developments and is expected to have a direct impact on the dynamics of transatlantic relations and Turkey's role in the region. /Periscope/
