“President Macron and European leaders called President Trump at their meeting. President stressed that Europe must stop buying Russian oil that is funding war, as Russia received 1.1 billion euros in EU fuel sales within a year”, White House official quoted Reuters.
He has also demanded that European leaders increase economic pressure on China, as according to him, Beijing is indirectly supporting Russia's military efforts.
The European Commission has proposed legislation to gradually cut Russian oil and gas imports from the EU by 1 January 2028.
After worsening relations with the West due to the war in Ukraine, Russia has significantly deepened economic and strategic ties with China. The Kremlin is increasingly shifting its focus from Europe to the East, with China and India becoming the biggest Russian oil buyers.
During Russian President Vladimir Putin's recent visit to Beijing, Russia and China have signed a new deal in the energy sector, adding further co-operation after existing natural gas deals.
According to Russian Energy Minister Sergei Tsevilev, the Russian state company “Rosneft” will supply Beijing with 2.5m tonnes of gross oil annually through pipelines passing through Kazakhstan.
