The announcement was made public through a post on his Social Truth network, where Trump announced that the new measures would take effect on October 1, 2025.
Under the plan, all brand and patented medicines imported to the US will face a 100% fee, unless the import company is building or starting construction of a production plant within the US.
Trump said this move aims to force pharmaceutical companies to transfer their production capacities to American soil in order to reduce dependence on foreign markets and increase national security.
Besides the pharmaceutical industry, new tariff measures will apply in other sectors as well. Trump announced the deployment of a 25% tax on all heavily imported trucks, arguing that this sector is vital for national infrastructure and the welfare of the American economy.
He added that the move would help American production companies such as Peterbilt, Kenworth and Fraightliner, protect themselves from what he called “unfair competition from outside”.
New tariffs will also affect the mobile and household equipment sector. A 50% fee will be set for kitchen cabinets and toilet sinks, while furniture and taperies will face a 30% fee.
According to the president, these products are “flooding the US market” and harming domestic producers, so strong measures are needed to protect national industry.
