So far, it remains unclear what Trump exactly means. Time, however, gives the announcement special importance. Today, the deadline set by Trump for Russian leader Vladimir Putin is marked to reach a peace agreement with Ukraine.
On Monday, Kyiv Post reported that President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russian authorities still show no readiness for real negotiations.
He recalled that just two weeks earlier in Washington, US President Donald Trump had given the Kremlin that timeline to decide on its readiness to meet at the leadership level, Telegraph broadcasts
According to Zelensky, Ukraine is ready for dialogue, but Moscow continues to bet on the war.
“Ukrainian is certainly ready for this. But the only thing Russia is doing is investing in further war. All their signals show on this,” said Zelensky.
As an example, he cited Putin's visit to China for the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation summit, where, according to Zelensky, the Russian president will be “mangets and maneuver” his favorite tactic.
In the context of the Kremlin's lack of readiness for talks, Zelensky stressed the need to continue pressure on Russia.
He stressed that the world is calling for the war to end, however, Moscow deliberately prolongs it.
Everyone in the world has said the fire should stop, everyone insisted the war should end. The only one who wants war is Russia”, he added.
On 21 August, Trump set a two-week deadline for peace talks between Kiev and Moscow, saying “after that will probably need to follow a different” approach.
This came after a secret post in Social Truth by the American leader who brought together two photos: one of which showed from Putin to Alaska and a historical image of US Vice President Richard Nixon pointing to Soviet leader Nikita Hrushchev.
It has been interpreted as an audition that the American president may at last be prepared to be harsh with Moscow.
