South African Ambassador to France Nathi Mthetwa lost his life after falling from the 22nd floor of a luxury hotel in Paris
French authorities have launched an investigation to dawn the event, while prosecutors confirmed that the diplomat's body was found Tuesday at noon, near the hotel where it was accommodated.
According to local media and official sources, Mthethwa's wife had contacted the police after receiving a controversial “message” from him on Monday evening. This led to the launch of a search operation, during which dog units were used to check the area near Bois de Boulogne, a large forest in western Paris.
The ambassador's phone had been traced to the area around 1500 on Monday. However, his body was found only a day later on the roof of the Hyatt Hotel, where he reportedly had opened his room window, according to the French newspaper Le Parisien.
The French prosecutor has not ruled out the possibility of suicide, but reports that the investigation is still under way. An investigative magistrate has visited the scene, while a forensic report is also expected.
The ambassador was a well - known figure on the South African political scene. He began his activity as an activist and later engaged in politics, where he served as the organising secretary of the ANC Youth League, the head of the Parliamentary Committee for Mining and Energy, the Police Minister during Kgalem Motlanthe presidency, and Jacob Zuma, Minister of Arts and Culture, and then also of Sports, Arts and Culture until 2023.
Early in 2024, he was appointed ambassador to France and a permanent representative of South Africa nearby U n NESTO.
The tragic event of Ambassador Mthetwa comes a few months after another shocking occasion, where a British teenager lost his life in Ibiza after falling from the third floor of a hotel.
According to local police, the 19-year-old whose identity has not been made public was killed shortly after the crash at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel in San Antonio City. /tch/ Periscopi/
