Tirana's Municipal Council will meet on September 23rd to vote on the dismissal of Mayor Erion Veliaj, who is in prison for more than six months, following the arrest of the SPAK on February 10th.
Socialist advisers have launched procedures, referring to Article 62 of the Law on Local Self-government, which envisions the mayor's dismissal in the event of a three-month non-proliferation in office. The dismissal requires 31 votes from 61 members, numbers the Socialists have secured.
After the Council's decision, the last word belongs to the government, with Prime Minister Edi Rama's firm. However, Veliaj has the right to complain to the Constitutional Court within 15 days, which would suspend the process and new elections until there is a final decision.
