Erion Veliaj has responded with an official letter to the Municipal Council regarding the procedure initiated for his dismissal, due to be held tomorrow.
In the document signed by him, Veliaj stresses that he was not officially informed by the Council secretary for the development of the envisioned meeting, known only by media sources.
For several days, Prime Minister Edi Rama proposed the dismissal from Veliaj's post, while nominated as SP candidate in the race Ogerta Manastirliu, writes TCh.
Veliaj's response:
On September 22nd 2025, the secretary of the Tirana Municipal Council has made a public announcement (there is no official announcement) on calling a meeting of the Municipal Council, scheduled for September 23rd, 1600.
This announcement contains no decision-making of the Municipal Council itself in terms of guaranteeing the constitutional right of the mayor to be heard, protected and expressed his position, as predicted in any serious and just process that could lead to a decision to suspend the constitutional mandate.
The Secretary of the Municipal Council has no legal license to make decisions on behalf of the Council, and much less to interpret the way the mayor should exercise his right to protection. The secretary's function is simply administrative, not political, not decision-making.
One more day before the meeting:
Mayor has not been officially informed of the purpose of the meeting;
The order of the day was not sent forth;
The causes or materials on which the dismissal is claimed have not been disclosed;
It's not guaranteed right to listen and protect.
We remember that the mayor is in detention conditions, through a non-professional security measure, which significantly limits his ability to be present voluntarily or effectively to pursue a process that could affect his status as elected by Tirana's citizens.
Mayor Erion Veliaj remains in expectation of a clear and documented decision-making by the Municipal Council, fully guaranteeing his right to exercise defence and be listened, as is the case with every citizen of the Republic of Albania, much less a democratic elected./Periscopi/
