Climbing to the stage at a political forum in New York City for an interview, Syrian President Ahmed al-Saharaa and retired United States General David Petraus have talked about the particularity of the situation.
Al-Saharaa, who ousted former President Bashar al-Assad and ended his family's 50-year rule in Syria in a fierce military offensive late last year, has been president since January.
And Petraus commanded American forces during the invasion of Iraq the forces that captured and imprisoned al-Sahara from 2006 to 2011 for the fight against occupation, writes Al Jazeera.
Petraus later served as director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
After his release, al-Sahara founded Frontin al-Nusra in Syria in 2012 to fight al-Assad.
Four years later, he broke off his ties with al-Qaeda.
A year later, al-Nusra joined other groups to form Hayat Tarhir al-Sham (HTS), led by al-Saharaa.
