The United States' suspension of Strategic Dialogue towards Kosovo has prompted strong reactions from former senior American officials, who directly hold the prime minister in charge, Albin Kurti.
Former American diplomat Jonathan Moore has commented on recent developments in reports between the US and Kosovo, saying Washington's decision to suspend Strategic Dialogue relates to the lack of progress and to the behaviour of the Kurti Government.
I'm going to be very direct and again I'm only speaking on my behalf, this suspension of strategic dialogue relates to the fact that Albin Kurti as prime minister in technical capacity has worked against the interests not only of the United States and the International Community but also of himself. So it might be said that Albin Kurti worked against the interests of the United States of America and its government,” said Moore on the Rubik show in Klan Kosova, broadcast Periscopi.
He added that over the past few months, including periods of the Trump and Biden administration, work has been done to draw Kosovo closer to the West, but there has been no progress.
“As the very capable ambassador here, Jeff Hovenier, very good friend of mine, who retired in January, had worked hard to make a difference, to bring progress, to bring dialogue even with Kurti's government, and not to mention the progress made in dialogue with Belgrade, which is a project with the European Union for many years now. It is almost impossible to show signs of progress in Kosovo,” said Moore.
In the same critical line has been former US Ambassador to Kosovo Jeffrey Havenier, who has also commented on the suspension of the US Strategic Dialogue.
According to Hovenier, the decision is the result of a Washington-based shelling of the Kurti Government's actions, with particular emphasis on the prime minister's statements against the Kosovo Constitutional Court.
He said Kurti's verbal attacks on justice institutions have had a direct impact on this serious decision by the United States.
Hovenier named the suspension as “major potential loss” for strengthening relations between the two countries and warned that this decision should be taken extremely seriously by institutions in Pristina.
On 12 September, the US suspended the Strategic Dialogue with Kosovo, rationalising it with the actions of the incumbent government and increasing tensions and instability in the country. /Periscope
