The Bolzano Regional Court has handed down its ruling in the trial process for raping a Finnish tourist in Val Gardena two years ago. Three seasonal workers from Kosovo aged 21, 26, and 27, have been found guilty, broadcast albinfo.ch.
Two of the men have been serving six years in prison, while the third defendant was sentenced to four years and eight months. The authors should also pay the young woman 60,000 euros in compensation, writes the bench.
The sentences were lower than those sought by the public prosecutor. The prosecutor had sought a ten-year prison sentence for everyone and over 300,000 euros in damages. The civilian side had also demanded payment.
The challenge arose during procedures regarding one expert's opinion: The defence had demanded that a lip reader analyze silent video recordings to clarify possible misunderstandings in communication between the victim and the defendant, albinfo.ch conveys. The defence eventually called for release from the charges.
Crime occurred in January 2023, when the Finnish tourist was sexually attacked several times. Reasoning the decision will be announced within 90 days. The defence will then have the opportunity to appeal. The decision is not yet final.
