Von der Leyen said on Tuesday that the EU should move decisively towards building a <x0med drop> to strengthen security at Europe's external borders.
Secretary - General NATO, Mark Rutte, also echoed the feeling, stressing the seriousness of the situation. He said that while the Alliance is still investigating who stands behind violations in Denmark, “in the case of Poland and Estonia is clear that it is the Russians”. He stressed, however, that the assessment concerns whether these actions were intentional or not, adding: “Even if not intentional, they are reckless and unacceptable”.
The Commission's president also made a broad reference to Ukraine, noting that, despite the ongoing conflict, “it has not lost any territory this year”. She stressed that sanctions against Moscow are operating “and announced the 19th package of measures. In this context, the EU has agreed with Kiev to spend a total of 2 billion euros on fears, enabling Ukraine to strengthen its operational capacities.
Von der Leyen gave particular importance to the new funding plan, dubbed “the compensation credit”, which will be based on Russian frozen assets. As she explained, these loans will not be disbursed immediately but in installments and depending on conditions. Part of the funding will be directed for strengthening the European defence industry through procurement by European companies.
