A Russian threat that entered Romanian airspace during an attack on neighbouring Ukraine and stood over NATO state territory for 50 minutes before returning to Ukraine again, Romania's Defence Ministry said on September 14th.
Two Romanian fighter aircraft F-16s detected Geran, followed his movements over Romania on Saturday evening through surveillance and radar, the defence ministry said through an announcement.
F-16 pilots received authorisation from their commanders to shoot down the fears, but “they assessed collateral risks and decided not to open fire”, the ministry said, The Guardian broadcasts Klankosova.tv.
It increased tensions over NATO airspace violations from Russia after Poland toppled some of the 19 Russian drones, who said they had entered its territory on September 10th.
This was the first time NATO opened fire on Russian butterflies since the launch of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, significantly exacerbating the already tense situation between Moscow and the Western military alliance.
Romania's Defence Ministry said that “strongly condemns the irresponsible actions of the Russian Federation and emphasises that they pose a new challenge to regional security and stability in the Black Sea area”.
Such “Incidents indicate the Russian Federation's lack of respect for international rights norms and put not only the security of Romanian citizens, but also NATO collective security”, it said in response.
