In the face of the current disaster in Gaza, and condemning both Israel and Hamas, French President Emmanuel Macron said justice “must prevail over force”.

His action, co-ordinated with the United Kingdom and under the sponsorship of Saudi Arabia, aims to keep the solution alive with two states, reports Bubc.

They believe that this long-standing international formula for peace is the only way to a fair and common future for both societies.

The alternative, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said at a UN conference in New York, is a solution with “a state “ ”, meaning Israeli dominance and “subservation” of Palestinians.

Nothing, he said, could justify their collective punishment, hunger or any form of ethnic cleansing. Israel is angry and threatening with reaction.

He sees the UN conference together with the recognition of a Palestinian state by the United Kingdom, France, Canada, Australia and other countries as a reward for Hamas after the Israeli attack and the kidnapping of October 7, 2023.

Some Israelite ministers want the answer to be an annex to parts of the West Coast, forever excluding the possibility of a Palestinian state in that part of the territory.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyah's ruling coalition, which includes extreme right-wing figures with announced policies for the expulsion of Palestinians and the construction of Jewish settlements instead, is determined to end the two-state solution.

US President Donald Trump's administration continues to support its Israeli ally, rejecting the European movement and punishing Palestinian Authority President (AP), Mahmoud Abbas.

He was barred from attending the conference in New York and he spoke only through a video connection.

The Conference on Palestine and the reaction of the Trump Administration mark the deepest ever division between Washington and its European allies on the way to resolving the conflict in the Middle East.

But Europeans believe that they have left little choice because of the situation on the ground.

Israel is now sending a third military division to the city of Gaza, where dozens of Palestinians are being killed every day; Hamas continues to hold nearly 50 hostages, many of them killed; while the West Coast is in the power of expanding Israeli settlements and the violence of the settlers.

All of this happens almost two years after the October 7th attacks, with few signs that further military pressure will force Hamas to surrender, as Israel requires.

The Macroni strategy is an attempt to show diplomacy offers a sustainable alternative.

First to achieve an applicable end to the war in Gaza, then a long - term solution in the form of two states of Israel and Palestine.

European countries argue Israel's strategy has failed, bringing only further suffering to civilians and jeopardising remaining hostages.

France argues that this shows that its form of diplomacy can exert influence over Hamas, because the key Arab countries attending the conference have now demanded from the group disarmed, hand over weapons to the Palestinian Authority (AP), adding that Hamas cannot have a leading role in the future of Palestinians.

Macron believes that this process thus creates an incentive for Israel as it keeps open the door to normalising relations with Saudi Arabia a long-desired goal by Netanyah and Trump. But the decision to recognise a Palestinian state against Washington's wishes constitutes an important diplomatic bet.

Looking at Macron at the speaker before the United Nations, listen to a president trying to take on a global lead role to find a way out of Gaza's “, as UN Secretary General called him, and to find a common Israeli-Palestinian future.

But speaking in terms of pure power, this was the wrong president.

Without the US leading the effort, there is not the same kind of important pressure that only Washington can exert on all sides.

And Trump administration continues to reject European approach.

This lack of co-ordination between key countries increases the sense of disfunction, while Qatar, like the former mediator between Israel and Hamas, continues to be involved again after Israel attacked Hamas' leaders on his land earlier this month.

Both Macron and Starmer cited the colonial heritage of their countries in the Middle East.

They remembered that after Britain withdrew from historic Palestine in 1948, the international community recognised the state of Israel.

Now, they said, were recognizing Palestinians' equal right to a state of their own.

Palestinians welcome recognition from European countries, but also know that these are the superpowers of the past.

Their decisions no longer bear the weight they once had.

Palestinian citizenship is only possible if supported by today's superpower, the United States.
