Unlike Article 5, NATO's collective defence element, Article 4 does not cause military action, but initiates a formal discussion of the alliance when a member considers that his territorial integrity or security is threatened.
Since the founding of NATO in 1949, Article 4 was used only several times mostly by members of Eastern Europe after Ukraine's full-scale invasion of Moscow.
