Britain on Sunday joined other countries like Australia and Canada in formal recognition of a Palestinian state prior to UN General Assembly meetings this week, during which the difficult Palestinian situation and Israel's offensive in Gaza are expected to be highlighted.
The U.K.'s decision carries special symbolics in view of its great role in the creation of Israel as a modern nation after World War II, Telegram records.
With this move, Britain has corrected the “mistakes of the past, recognising Palestine as a state of equal rights and sovereignty”, said Husam Zomlot, head of the Palestinian mission Sunday after the announcement.
He said it was a delayed “recognition” of the right of self-rule and a realisation that peace can come only when Palestine is free.
“Today, to revive the hope of peace for Palestinians and Israelis, and a two-state solution, the United Kingdom formally recognises the State of Palestine”, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Sunday.
The humanitarian crisis caused by man in Gaza reaches new depths. The Israeli government's ruthless and growing bombing of Gaza, last week's offensive, hunger and destruction are completely unattended”, he has added.
Otherwise, at least 64,905 people have been killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza, according to Hamas-led Ministry of Health of the territory.
Most of the population has also been constantly displaced; more than 90% of the houses are estimated to have been damaged or destroyed; health care systems, water, sanitation and hygiene have collapsed; and UN-backed food safety experts have declared <x0 bready>” in Gaza City. /Periscope/
