Through a communique, the Embassy stresses that press freedom cannot function unless journalists enjoy security and protection during the exercise of their profession.
The statement also emphasises that the Netherlands remains committed to promoting independent journalism and the protection of reporters, naming their role a fundamental pillar of a democratic society.
Ambassador Boven, during the meeting with RTK editors, announced that she has heard closely the concerns and challenges facing them, underlining the importance of an open, transparent and fair media environment.
“There can be freedom of speech or freedom of press if journalists are not sure to do their job. The Netherlands continues to campaign for the protection of independent journalism and for the safety of journalists worldwide, as they are the cornerstone of a democratic society. In that spirit, Ambassador Karin Boven invited a group of six public broadcaster news editors RTK and heard their thoughts, concerns and challenges. Like the Netherlands, we strongly believe in freedom of expression, freedom of the press and in an open, fair and transparent offering from the media, enabling journalists at the same time to carry out their role with high integrity.
