In a public response, the UN has stressed that earlier warnings of scary import growth are already coming true. According to official data, during the first nine months of 2025, imports have exceeded 5 billion euros, while exports have dropped by about 30m euros compared to the same period last year.
This is the clearest mirror of a fragile economy, consumes ready products from abroad and exports cash ready. Kosovo is becoming poorer every day, citizens are losing purchasing power, and local producers are being left without support. If the government continues to remain silent, this year it will find Kosovo with the most deepening trade deficit in history,” said UN Chairman Agim Sahin.
The GDP considers Kosovo's current economic model failed, stressing that the country relies mainly on construction and trade, while strategic sectors such as agriculture, production, extraction industry and energy are being overlooked. According to the UN, this model not only does not guarantee long-term development but poses a direct risk to the country's economic stability.
In this direction, the UN urgently calls on the Government of Kosovo to take concrete measures to improve the economic situation, proposing:
Realization and support for local producers;
Easiness for exporters and opening of new markets;
Investment orientation in production, agriculture, industry and energy;
Fiscal policy that increases citizens' purchasing power;
Developing a national strategy for sustainable economic development.
Kosovo cannot build prosperity on consumption and import. Without production, export and bold development policies, the country will remain dependent and impoverished,” concluded Sahin.
