According to a prime minister's announcement, Kurti was quoted as saying that the ideal of the Bytyqi brothers, who were killed 26 years ago by Serbian forces, serves as a guide to achieve what they were sacrificed for.
Remembering and reminding the martyrs of the nation, in this case the Bytyqi brothers, we remind ourselves how high the price we paid for the freedom we enjoy and the people we have, but their ideal also serves us as a guide to move forward in order to achieve what they have loved and for which they have been sacrificed. The star, Agron, and Mehmet will be remembered forever, and our generation is tasked by generations after us”, he said.
The Bytyqi Brothers were warriors of the Kosovo Liberation Army, members of the anti-Atlantic volunteer unit “”. On June 23rd 1999, a few days after Kosovo's liberation, three Albanian brothers had undertaken a very human initiative: to escort a Roma family from Prizren towards the border with Serbia, which was heading towards Kraleva.
During this trip, the three missed the border, for which they were arrested by Serbian police, and were sentenced by the Prokuple Anti-Wage Court to 15 days in prison. When the sentence was complete, the three Bytyqi brothers were sent to a Serbian police training base, where they were shot in the back of their heads and destroyed their tracks.
Their troops were found in 2001 in a mass cemetery in Petrovo Selo, near the town of Kladovo, along with other Albanians killed by Serb forces during the war in Kosovo.
In October 2019 and July 2022, the U.S. House of Representatives adopted two resolutions, whereby the US has asked Serbia for concrete actions and co-operation with international justice to bring to justice the persons involved in this crime. /Periscope/
