The renowned American professor and international affairs analyst, Alon Ben-Meir, has given a direct and harsh assessment of the current political situation in Kosovo and relations with the United States of America, calling the suspension of strategic dialogue between the US and Kosovo a severe awake for Prime Minister Albin Kurti, writes. Periscope.
In a recently released opinion, Ben-Meir stresses that, although former President Trump's foreign policy often does not follow traditional lines, the decision to suspend dialogue was not entirely wrong. According to him, Prime Minister Kurti has failed to be a real citizen at a time when the country most needed vision and devotion to strategic allies.
“Kurti failed in state testing. When a country faces increased political tensions inside and abroad, citizenship becomes vital to its future and well-being. So far, Kurt has failed to show the statesman just when it was necessary,” writes Ben-Meir.
Analysing Washington's decision, he describes it as the strongest clash in US-Kosovo relations since 2008, stressing that the interruption of this strategic co-operation strips Kosovo of a vital international defence on the global stage.
“Now that this shield is broken, risks for Kosovo are great,” he warns.
Ben-Meir also highlights increasingly tense relations with the EU and Kurt's failure to honour agreements brokered by international partners, including the Association of Serb Major Communities.
It also criticises Kurti's nationalist approach and lack of focus on fundamental issues such as economic development, fighting corruption and attracting foreign investors.

Ben-Meir also recalls that Kurti has unwisely intervened in American domestic politics, which, according to him, has irritated former President Trump and affected the deterioration of relations.
It intervened unwisely in the electoral process during the US presidential campaign in 2020, publicly supporting Beden, which angered Trump,” is said in analysis.
In the deepest part of the opinion, Ben-Meir refers to philosophical concepts to describe the traits a true leader must have:
In the Republic, Plato spoke of the concept of philosopher king. He said a real statesman is someone who has some kind of wisdom and vision that ordinary leaders don't. ”
Finally, Ben-Meir offers a practical approach to the road ahead for Kosovo, stressing the importance of constructive communication with the US and the EU, a return to dialogue with Serbia, and the formation of a government capable of building consensus and stability. He urges Kurt to call new elections as the final test of his political legitimacy if he fails to form a functional government.
Kosovo does not need an ideological nationalist, but a visionary and courageous leader, a statesman who can respond to the public's demand for security, political stability and development,” ends Ben-Meir./PERISCOP/
