Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Melon announced that Italy would recognise Palestine if Israeli hostages are released and Hamas is released from the government, writes Euronews, Dukagjini broadcast.
Mellon announced the parties forming her government will submit a motion requiring the recognition of Palestine in the Italian Parliament, under the condition of two conditions that are the release of hostages taken by Hamas during the 7 October 1923 attacks and Hamas' expulsion from any involvement in a future Palestinian government.
I'm not against knowing Palestine, but we need to focus on the right priorities”, Mellon said.
We remember that a general strike was held on Monday across Italy, attended by about 500 thousand people in response to the ongoing genocide in the Gaza Strip, the humanitarian aid blockade by the Israeli Army.
The recognition of Palestine was one of the demands coming from the so-called “Pro-Pal Movement”, a group of civil society organisations, unions and citizens' associations.
According to a recent poll, 40.6% of Italians favour full recognition of a Palestinian sovereign state, while 21.9% of respondents preferred to establish a temporary international administration.
