Israel announced Thursday that it has carried out new air strikes against Hezbollah's military targets in southern Lebanon to prevent the militant group's regrouping in this part of the country.
The United States brokered a ceasefire in November between Lebanon and Israel after more than a year of war fighting in Gaza, but Israel has continued with long-term attacks on Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran across the border.
Hezbollah has been declared a terrorist group by the United States, while the European Union has blacklisted the Lebanese group's military arm, but not the political party.
The Israeli Army confirmed in a communiqué that uncontested attacks were under way, since it had earlier said it would hit Hezbollah's military infrastructure “in response to the group's illegal efforts to restore the activity in this area”.
It warned the inhabitants of three villages to evacuate.
The Lebanese state news agency NNA confirmed the attacks in the area. There was no immediate reaction from Hezbollah or information on damage or casualties.
Lebanon's Prime Minister, Nawaf Salaam, said the evacuation warning conflicts with international peace efforts.
Lebanon's government is committed to stopping hostilities and engaged in meetings to ensure the implementation of a UN resolution that ended fighting between Hezbollah and Israel in 2006, Salaam said in an X post.
Lebanon is under pressure from the US, Saudi Arabia and Hezbollah's internal rivals for disarming the group.
Hezbollah has said it would be a very wrong step even to talk about disarming as Israel continues air strikes on Lebanon and invades large parts of the country south. / REL
