US President Donald Trump signed an announcement Friday (19.09,2025) that strikes a year-old $11,000 visa application tax, while his adminsitrate continues to challenge immigration policy.
The H-1B visa programme allows highly qualified workers to work legally in the US for a limited period of three years.
American technology firms have used the visa programme to bring workers to routine. Applicants from China and India have secured the largest number of visas.
In 2025 over 70% of approved visas have been from India. Each year a limited number of 850,000 visas are offered under two categories. Currently, visa applicants pay a small tax to be added to the lottery, and if another tax is selected in order for the application process to become formal. Companies recruiting workers usually pay the tax.
Trump Administration exacerbates H-1B visas
Trade Minister Howard Lutnick said, the new tax aims to promote firms to employ more American citizens.

Trump also unveiled a fast procedure for obtaining US citizenship for foreigners who are able to pay $1m.
Focused Technology Signatures
Critics of the difficulty of entering qualified foreign employees say that the US risks losing competitiveness in technology, while firms will face costs of additional millions of dollars. Others say the system needs to be reformed because it has brought many frauds and abuses on the part of firms to find free labor.
It is still not clear how and when the new tax will be implemented, or whether the indictment will be filed in court against it. New visa taxes are normally determined by Congress after months of public depabe.
According to CBS News, current taxes range from 1700 to over $4000. According to the Amazon government data and its code computer system The AWS has taken the approved number of visas to 12,000 in 2025. Microsoft and Meta have seen 5,000 approved visas.
