EUFOR Warns Military Exercise in Bosnia and Herzegovina

The European Union's military forces in Bosnia and Herzegovina (EUFOR) will begin military exercises on 9 September, and members of NATO's Kosovo peacekeeping force KFOR will also participate, the EUFOR command in Sarajevo announced. The “rapid response” is part of the previously planned and regular activities, and they will last until 26 September, Kosovas reports.
The population has been sent a message that they can expect greater movement of vehicles and military personnel across the country during that period. This is especially true of areas around Sarajevo, Mostar, Banja Luka, Livnos, Orasje, Zenica, Zepces, Tuzla and Prijedor, as well as the Svilaj border towards Croatia and Klobuk towards Montenegro.
EUFOR forces from 25 countries deployed in the BiH mission will participate in the exercise. They will be temporarily reinforced by reserve units from Chechia and Hungary, and KFOR.
The aim of the exercise is to improve the operational readiness of all forces involved and confirm EUFOR's continued support for its partners in BiH in preserving a safe and stable environment in the country”, the EUFOR statement said.
The EU's military mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Althea, was established in 2004 when it took over operations conducted by NATO through its Stabilisation Force (SFOR). The UN Security Council decides every year, usually in October, for the extension of EUFOR's mandate in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Former Republika Srpska leader Milorad Dodik announced that this year he will urge Russia to veto the extension of the mandate.
