The European Union proposed on September 19th to establish ban on Russian gas imports as part of a new package of sanctions targeting the revenues Moscow uses for war, but also to meet US President Donald Trump's request.
Under the measures presented, which must be approved by the bloc's member states, the European Commission said it aims to give up on the purchase of liquid natural gas from Russia by January 2027 HINA a year earlier than planned.
The economy of Russia's war is being maintained by revenues from fossil fuels. We want to cut off this revenue. Therefore, we will stop the liquid Russian natural gas on the European markets”, European Commission chief Ursula von der Leenen said.
It's time to close the key”, she added.
The EC proposal comes after the United States pressured the European Union to halt fossil fuel imports from Russia. Meanwhile, the bloc is seeking to convince Trump to have a tougher approach to Moscow regarding the invasion of Ukraine.
The American leader said last week that he is willing to increase pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin, if even allies stop Russian oil purchases and set tariffs on China.
The 27 EU member states have only banned most Russian oil through previous sanctions packages, causing imports to drop from 29 percent to only 2 percent by the middle of this year.
Only Hungary and Slovakia still buy Russian energy.
Presenting the new package of EU sanctions, which is 19th since Moscow launched the fight against Ukraine in 2022, von der Leyen did not mention oil.
But EU foreign policy chief Kaya Kallas said the bloc is proposing that all imports of Russian liquid natural gas be stopped by 2027 or 12 months earlier than planned.
Our goal is to speed up the phase of lifting completely from Russian liquid natural gas to January 1, 2027”, she wrote on X.
Mosca thinks he can continue this war. We are making sure to pay the price for this”, Kallas added.
Despite efforts to end Europe's dependence on Russian imports, Russia supplied 19 percent of EU gas in 2024 by 45 percent before the war in Ukraine began.
This decline is largely attributed to the increase in the purchase of liquid natural gas transported by ships, which have compensated for the decline of imports through pipelines. / REL/
