Trump has demanded that Europe stop energy imports from Moscow before agreeing to impose sanctions on Moscow over the war in Ukraine.
The European Union has already reduced its oil imports from Russia by about 90 percent since Moscow began its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, and has announced it plans to give up altogether Russian imports by 2027.
The EU states, Hungary and Slovakia still import Russian oil through pipelines, and these two states oppose plans to give up more quickly on Russian energy.
EC chief Ursula von der Leeyen, during a meeting with Trump on Tuesday, told US leaders that Brussels wants “to impose tariffs on oil supplies still coming to the EU”.
“We, at the right time, will present what we have in mind on this matter”, EU spokesman Olof Gill said on Wednesday.
Any effort to impose tariffs on remaining Russian oil imports in the EU would only require the support of a qualified majority of member states.
This implies that Hungary and Slovakia would probably not be able to block any such initiative. / REL/ Periscopi/
