"Emotionally tired”, father of former police officer Arbnor Spahiu: He is suffering that he is being held unjustly in prison

Emotionally tired and frustrated by injustice. Protest organiser Erza Zeqiri stressed that the presence of citizens is evidence against injustice.

“Arbnor, a former honest and dedicated police officer to the service of law and citizens, is today unjustly in prison in Serbia, deprived of freedom and separated from his family. Our presence here is more than symbolic support. It is evidence that injustice cannot be covered with silence. We are here to raise the voice of Arbnor, to say decisively that his freedom is fundamental right and that no one should be held hostage to injustice”, she said.

She added that it is necessary for local and international institutions to take responsibility.

The “call on the institutions of the Republic of Kosovo to engage without letup for its release. We also call on international institutions the European Union, the United Nations and human rights organisations to assume responsibility to ensure the fundamental rights of a citizen who is unjustly being held in prison”, Zeqiri said.

Even his family member, Donjeta Spahiu, demanded that the state of Kosovo act without delay and not remain silent in the face of this injustice.

“We call on our state institutions not to hold back, delay and neglect the case. The silence of the State is not simply a failure, it is a double injustice. It is the State's duty to protect every citizen of his country no matter where he is. Today, more than ever, we must show that we are a state protecting its citizens”, she said.

Addressing the international factor also stressed the urgent need for intervention.

Also, today we want to be forced into international institutions, embassies of friendly countries, human rights organisations. We urge you not to remain silent in the face of this injustice. Your silence is a burden on our shoulders. But your voice, your influence, is crucial. We need your solidarity and support not tomorrow, but today. Arbnor is a symbol of an injustice that could happen to any of us”, she said.

Former Kosovo Police Special Unit member Arbnor Spahiu was detained on June 7th at the border checkpoint from Hungary to Serbia. Justice authorities in Serbia accuse him of allegedly committing criminal work “severe murder”.
