The incident occurred during a budget debate, when Parliament Speaker Martin Bosma é part of the far-right Party for Freedom declared that Owehand's dress violated the political neutrality rule in the parliamentary hall. Although Bosma initially hesitated to intervene, following objections from other party leaders, he decided to implement the rule and urged the MP to step down.
Owehand resisted at first, but eventually left voluntarily, in protest, reports Roya News.
Her absence did not last long. She returned to the hall a little later, this time dressed in a saddle-shaped T-shirt a global symbol of solidarity with Palestine because of its colors matching the Palestinian flag.
This time, she was allowed to speak and present her proposals without hindrance.
The images of the incident and its symbolic return spread rapidly to social networks. While supporters viewed her move as a bold “act of peaceful resistance”, critics saw it as a sign of the deepening division the war in Gaza has brought to European societies.
Later, Owehand stated that he wanted to use her clothes as a means to express solidarity with the Palestinian people and to condemn what she called <x0-genocide” in Gaza.
When the government refuses to recognise the genocide and refuses to act, it is our duty to continue to show solidarity with Palestinians. Free Palestine”, she said./Periscopi/
