US President Donald Trump has declared that European leaders will visit the United States on Monday or Tuesday to discuss ways to end the war in Ukraine.
The American president added that he would speak to Russian President Vladimir Putin “soon, as well as signalled that his administration was ready to pass into a second phase of sanctions against Moscow.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the sanctions were the necessary “and urged European countries to stop buying Russian energy.
This comes at a time when Russia launched its biggest air raids on Ukraine during the war so far, killing four people and first hitting Ukraine's main government building in Kiev.
After the attack, during which Russia fired at least 810 drones and 13 rockets towards Ukraine, Trump said it was not “satisfied with the situation”.
Some European leaders will come individually to our country on Monday or Tuesday”, Trump said.
Russia has intensified attacks on Ukraine since Trump and Putin held a summit in Alaska last month.
Speaking to ABC News, Zelensky said the continuation of Russian oil and gas purchase by European partners was not “right”.
He added: “We must stop [purchasing] any kind of energy from Russia, and by the way, everything, every agreement with Russia. We can't have any deal if we want to stop them. ”
Zelensky also welcomed Trump's plans to impose secondary tariffs for countries that trade with Russia aiming to undermine Moscow's ability to finance the war.
“I think the idea to set tariffs to countries that continue to make deals with Russia is the right idea”, he said.
Russia has sold some $885 billion (U.S.) of oil and gas since the beginning of Ukraine's full invasion in March 2022, according to the Centre for Energy and Clear Air Research.
